The Hidden Element:
Rosalie Neilson & Audrey Moore

March 18–May 7, 2006

The "thread" which is common to the weft-faced tapestries of Audrey Moore and the warp-faced hangings of Rosalie Neilson are the threads that are not visible—"the hidden element"–which bind together the designs made by the visible threads. As weavers and teachers, respectively at Damascus Pioneer Craft School and the Oregon College of Art & Craft, both of these artists have had a profound influence on the Portland area.

This exhibition celebrates their contribution to the local art community with a selection of their recent collaborative work. Their textiles complement each other, not only in design but in color. The hand drawn curvilinear shapes and narrative themes of Moore's work creates a visual contrast to the geometric compositions of Neilson's computer-designed weavings. Likewise, the rich hues of hand-dyed wool in Moore's tapestries absorb the light, while Neilson's work reflects the light back to the viewer in a palette of brilliant color.
