Defining the Bamboo Aesthetic

Guest curated by artist and author Nancy Moore Bess, this exhibition presents works that use bamboo as a motif or medium. The question is raised, "How does a specific media influence aesthetic decisions and determine how an artist might choose to use it in their work?"

Nancy Moore Bess: Bamboo and the Culture of Japan
Wednesday, March 15, 7pm at PNCA
Nancy Moore Bess is an internationally know textile and bamboo craftsperson. For the past thirty years, she has created baskets that reflect her research into cross-cultural, especially Japanese influences on her craft. Bess is a curator as well, and lectures on bamboo and basketry and around the world. This lecture is presented a part of the 2006 Excellence in Craft Lecture series.

Saturday, March 25, 2pm
Jiro Yonezawa, Charissa Brock and Troy Susan will discuss their work and reveal some of the secrets of working with bamboo. There will also be samples of live bamboo from the Bamboo Craftsmen Company. This event is free and open to the public.
